Yours is a touching and triumphant story and I enjoyed it.
It struck me that as you drew your first breath, a callous doctor misdiagnosed and went on to discount all you would accomplish. He went on to disparage you and your mom, not advocate for your or value your humanity.
Not only do you and your mom go on to disprove him, but you excel as a student and a human being, eventually becoming a doctor yourself. Now as Dr. Zha, you care about your patients, do your best to get their diagnoses right, honor their humanity and advocate for them always. It's such a full circle life story and you must think about your life's arc often.
Wow thank you for your kind words. The phenomenon of symptom dismissal and patient gaslighting goes deep. And I find myself unconsciously doing it sometimes. Then I feel like a hypocrite. 😅 I suppose the first step is recognizing it. And if given the chance, do over. 🩵
Without ever hoping to meet, I know I would love your mother. As a mom, I hope I would have been as strong as her. As a daughter, in a similar situation, I am confident my mother would have been a thief as well.
You would. It's in our genes. In our family, my cousin and I call it "our McQuerrey is showing". (Refers to the old Scottish family name.) The determination to stand and fight for what's right when the world boxes you in is universal yet still rare.
Not all mothers love with the fierce determination that your mother does. It’s a rare gift, and I'm glad that you recognize it. 💝 Happy Mother’s Day to you both, Dr. Zha.
I'm soooo in love with Mom's cheongsam. That's what we call it in Malaysia, I am not sure what you guys refer to it as. And your origin story ... I will think of this story whenever I see red ink. And in a beautiful twist, I actually bought a red pen today. ♥️
Also, this was the absolutely BEST thing I have watched today. Your storytelling is so beautifully perfect. I was so invested. Please share more of these with us!
If I could start over again I would move to your neighborhood and do everything I could to make you mission happen for all in need. It’s the right thing to do.
Love the story. Also love that you did it with @The Nocturnists. They're one of my favorite podcasts. I actually had tickets to (one of) the caregiving performances in NYC but couldn’t attend so I’m extra glad to see yours here. Great job!
Thank you for telling us such a beautiful story.
It was a pleasure!
Please give my warmest regards to your mother and thank her for raising such a wonderful daughter. With hugs from Arizona. 🌵
Thank you so much!! Hugs!
I knew you must have had an amazing mother and story by the way you see people and honor their humanity.
Thanks for sharing this, and much honor and respect to your mother on Mother’s Day and always.
She knew.
Thank you so much for the kind words.🥹🥹🥹

This hit home - hard. I was born at 26 weeks and have right sided hemiplegia. My heart ached reading your post.
Thank you for sharing your story!!! To all the “defective” babies. 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Delightful! Thanks for this story gift!

To all mothers everywhere, thank you.
Thank you! It makes one wonder doesn’t it, if my strength was put to test, would I have what it takes? 😅🩵

Two strong women. Both beautiful inside and out
Your mother reminds me of my mother, in her unwavering faith in her children.
